Occuclaytions: Flapper Design
When I think of the Roaring Twenties, I think of flappers. To me, they are the quintessential persona of the era. Perhaps it is for this reason that the Flapper is my favorite Occuclaytion so far. I took great care to get her just right. If I am going to say I did a project based on the 1920s, how could I not? I repositioned the angle of her head, the shape of her arms, and the gesture of her fingers who knows how many times to match the music I could hear her singing. I am hopeful by doing so, you can hear it, too.
This sculpture is not the first of the series to include a prop. However, this particular prop challenged me to fabricate believability with only a handful of odds and ends. It was a fun creative puzzle to solve. Included in the microphone are: finishing washers, snap backs, a piece of broken jewelry, and a random metal rod cut down to size.
It has been a very long time since I've made a seed bead necklace. I've got to hand it to all the beaders out there! I forgot how wily those little beads could be. And please don't get me started on how long it took me to string the needle.
