Occuclaytions: Suffragette Design
I designed the barber first. It took me approximately 50 drawings to settle on his look. By the time I arrived at the suffragette, I was…how should I put this…over it. Her design is basically the same as the farmer, but with all the accoutrement of a lady fighting for our right to vote. I’ll admit, I probably could have done her more justice, but for what I lack in the drawing, I tried to make up for in the sculpture, particularly in regard to her accessories.
I decided to hand sew her flag instead of sculpting it from clay. A friend made me a paper pattern to follow, and after two failed attempts, I think I nailed the third one; especially considering this was the first thing I’ve ever really sewn! I love the visual impact the flag gives the sculpture, as well as the additional textural element.
Yesterday was Labor Day in the United States. What a fitting day to finalize the sculpting phase of this project.
Painting is up next; I can hardly wait to get to work!
